Father’s day is almost here, when we celebrate the gift of Fathers that God gives to his people, a role that is both a wonderful joy and a heavy responsibility. Christian Dad’s are an indispensable part of the family, bringing something only they can give to their children. On Father’s day, their families say, “Thank you” for the hard work and love that fathers do all year round.
The Christian Father
To understand the God-given role that father’s have in the family, one needs to read the creation story from the book of Genesis. God designs the family to be a single unit, beginning with a husband and wife:
“So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them”
(Genesis 1:27).
God created the pair to manage all of creation. He gave them stewardship over the birds, animals, plants, and everything else that God had created, so they could care for it the same way he would.
St. Paul, in several of his letters, writes about the role that a husband and father have in the family. The most famous is the lengthy passage from Ephesians 5 which can be summarized with the first sentence, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” As the leader of the household, the Father’s job is to love his wife and the family with the same sacrificial love that Christ has for the church.
To do this, he is to be the leader in guiding his family in faith and life. In Ephesians 6, St. Paul writes, “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” The Christian father’s job is to lead the family, the whole family, in Christian devotion and service.
Father’s day, then, is a day to celebrate that role by showing love and care to the man who fills it. While every man falls short of completely filling the role that God gives them, we can celebrate the good work that Fathers do in our lives. Here are five gift ideas that are perfect for the Christian dad.
Symbol of the Christian Father’s Strength
A cross necklace is a wonderful symbol to celebrate the role that God has given the Father in the family. The cross reminds us , first and foremost, of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us. He showed his great love for all of us by dying on the cross. Christian fathers are called to have that same love, and a cross can celebrate that.
While you can find crosses that are extremely fancy, many dads prefer something simple and classic. There are two cross necklaces in particular that a Christian family might get for dad:
- God’s Love Iron Cross Necklace : Made out of titanium and etched with the words of (John 3:16), this cross is both a symbol of God’s love.
- Through Christ–Cross Pendant : Made out of stainless steel, this cross has a the words of Philippians 4:13 crafted onto it.
A Great Christian Book
A great Christian father is always looking for ways to serve better. Sometimes that means reading some great Christian literature. There are many great books on being a strong man and a good father. Here are a couple suggestions:
- Man Up!: The Quest for Masculinity by Jeff Hemmer. This discusses the problem of masculinity in American culture and proposes following the sacrificial model that comes from the Bible.
- Courages Fathers of the Bible by Joel Biermann. This bible study looks at several fathers from the Bible, pointing out their flaws and successes.
- A Year with the Church Fathers by Mike Aquilina. This devotional book uses wisdom from the ancient church fathers to guide us in our contemporary struggles.
A Fancy Shave
Disposable razors and harsh chemicals have become the normal shaving routine for most men. Sometime in the past couple generations, we lost the the art of shaving the way our grandfathers did. Use this guide to introduce dad to the old-school way of shaving. He’ll find the shave closer, more comfortable, and less expensive.
If Dad doesn’t want to learn a new skill, maybe pamper him with an old-school barbershop shave and a haircut. You’ve probably seen something like this in old movies. This isn’t like a day at the spa. It’s a manly experience that he probably hasn’t had before.
Personal Shopping Service
Many men enjoy the shopping experience, and they like to think about fashion and style so they can look respectable for their families. Not all men are like this, though. If you husband or dad is like most guys, he doesn’t want to be bothered with a store shopping experience.
There are many online personal shopping services for men. They typically have a stylist choose several pieces of clothing, and then they ship them to your home. Dad tries them on, and he returns anything he doesn’t want. It’s a great way to help update his style without the bother of actually going shopping.
Do Something Together
There is a stereotype about how Mother’s Day and Father’s Day work. On Mother’s Day, mom just wants the whole family together. On Father’s Day, dad just wants everyone to leave him alone for once (I’m watching the game!).
While that may be true in some households, most dads love to be with their families. Father’s Day is a great day to plan an activity that Dad loves, but he doesn’t get to do very often. Go to a concert for a band he loves. Take the family to see his favorite sport team or do a hobby that he loves. Not only will he appreciate the time focused on his interests, you can teach the kids that loving others means doing things that they love to do.
These fantastic gift ideas are a great way to celebrate what the dad in your household. Whatever you decide to do, give thanks to God for the gift of a Father. Show dad that you love his faithful leadership and service to the family.
